Octopuses and Squid
Octopuses and squids are mollusks. Octopuses have eight long
arms and squids have ten long arms. They have suckers on the arms to grip
objects are their prey.
Defensive Actions
Octopuses can match the color, pattern and texture of their
body to their surroundings. They have special muscle and pigment cells on their
skin to change color. This defensive action helps them to avoid predators, such
as sharks, eels and dolphins. Some times when they get caught, thry blow out a
cloud of black ink on the enemy to escape.
Movement of Squids
Squids draw water into their bodies and force it out through
back with the help of a funnel near the neck. This helps them to move their
bodies through the water.
Giant Squid
The giant squid is one of the biggest invertebrates on
earth. The largest giant squid ever found was 18 meters (about 60 feet) in
length and weighed over 900 kilograms (about 1,980 pounds).
Blue-Ringed Octopus
The blue-ringed octopus is poisonous enough to kill a human
being in a few minutes. It is pale brown to yellow in color, but shows blue
rings all over its body when alarmed.
