Arachnids / Spider

Arachnids are defined as invertebrate animals that have eight legs. However, in some arachnids the front pair of legs may have adapted for feeding, defense, and sensory perception rather than walking. Almost all arachnids live on land, although some live in freshwater areas. There are over 100,000 different species of arachnids. The most common forms of arachnids are spiders, scorpions, harvestmen, ticks, and mites.

Although arachnids may look similar to insects, they are different from insects in two major respects. Arachnids have eight legs while insects only have six legs. Arachnids are also different from insects in that arachnids don’t have antennae or wings.
