Sea Snakes
With streamlined body and paddle-like tail, sea snakes are well adapted to live in the oceans and seas. They are usually found in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.
Characteristics of Sea Snake
Sea snakes do not have gills and hence have to come up to the surface to breathe. After taking a gasp of air, they can stay underwater for
20 to 30 minutes. Their paddle-like tail helps them in swimming
swiftly. Some sea snakes can dive 100 meters or more and can remain underwater for up to 80 minutes.
Eating Habits
Sea snakes use their venom to kill their prey and swallow them whole. Their skull bones are loosely attached and they are capable of dislocating their lower jaw and move it sideways to swallow larger prey. They usually feed on fish, fish eggs, crabs, prawns and other animals.
Banded Sea Snake
Banded sea snakes are very poisonous. They usually live in the mangrove swamps and shallow tropical waters of coral reefs. These snakes come to shore to mate and lay eggs. during this time they may spend up to ten days on land.
