Freshwater Birds and Shorebirds
Freshwater birds and shorebirds (wading birds) spend most of their time in and around bodies of water. They usually nest in trees or bushes near ponds, lakes, rivers and seashores. Birds found around freshwater bodies include swans, ducks, kingfishers, moorhens and grebes.
Crane
Cranes are tall wading birds found in almost all continents, except South America and Antarctica. They have long necks and bills, and big rounded wings. They usually feed on fish, insects and snakes.
Duck, Swan and Goose
Ducks, swan and goose are waterfowl that are found o all continents exept Antarctica. They have waterproof wings, short legs and webbed feet which help them float and swim in water.
Flamingo
Flamingos are large pink to crimson-colored wading birds. They have long, hooked beaks and long legs tzat help them wade deeper than any other bird. Flamingos eat algae, small water insects and crustaceans such as shrimps.Anhinga
Anhingas (water turkeys or snakebirds) are large water birds. They have a long neck and a sharp-pointed bill. Unlike most water birds, anhingas do not have waterproof feathers. So often after a swim, they perch on trees with open wings to dry their feathers and warm their bodies.Common Kingfisher
Common Kingfishers are small, brightly colored birds with blue-green wings found in Europe, Africa and Asia. They live around ponds, streams, lakes and rivers. Kingfishers feed on aquatic insects and small fish. Once they see a fish in the water, they dive in beak first and fly out with the fish in their beak.
