The giant panda is a black- and-white bear that lives in China. It is a large, robust animal with a round head, heavy shoulders, a stocky body and a short tail. It has black fur on its ears, around its eyes, muzzle, legs and shoulders. Giant pandas inhabit the mountain forests in central-western and southwestern China.

Their favorites are umbrella bamboo, arrow bamboo, and golden bamboo. Pandas spend 10-12 hours a day eating bamboo and consume between 12.5 kg of bamboo in a day.

    Threatened

Giant pandas are one of the rarest animals on earth. There are only around 1,000 giant pandas left in the wild, and around 100 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers. They are threatened by the destruction of their habitat. Large arears of China`s natural forests have been cleared for agriculture, timber and firewood to meet the needs of the large and growing human population. Other threats include illegal hunting, low reproductive rate and food shortage. The giant pandas in the wild are rarely seen and are considered elusive.
