PeacockPeacock (also known as the peacock) is a medium-sized bird most closely related to the pheasant. Unlike its common pheasant cousin who lives in the Northern Hemisphere, the peacock is in a warmer climate in the southern hemisphere, with the peacock is most commonly found in India.
There are three main types of peacock, peacock African Congo, the Indian peacock and peacock green are probably native to Asia but are now in Africa and parts of Australia. All three different peacock species are knwon for their elaborate and dull male peacocks, peacocks brown women (compared to men).
The male peacock is best known for its huge tail feathers that fan behind the peacock and can be nearly two meters long. This colorful display of the peacock is thought to be used for coupling and defense. The male peacock attracts a female to mate with showing his range of elaborate feathers, and when the male peacock feels threatened, it will fan its tail in order to make themselves look bigger and therefore try to intimidate predators approaching .
The peacock is an omnivorous bird eats insects, plants, seeds and flower heads. Peacocks have also been known to nibble on small mammals and reptiles to supplement their diet, ensuring they get the right nutrients. Peacocks have a number of natural predators in the wild that include dogs and wild cats, medium-sized mammals such as raccoons and even tigers have been known to hunt peacocks.
Peacocks generally get about 20 years, although some peacock individuals have been known to go to older ages especially peacock individuals who are in captivity. Generally, peacock populations are under great threat, although the peacock green, is listed as vulnerable to extinction mainly because of hunting and loss of habitat.
Are known as male peafowl peacocks and females are known as peafowl peahen (in a manner similar to chickens and pheasants). The male peacock is generally about twice the size of the female peahen, and more when the male peacock displays its plumage (feathers). When the male peacock is not its bright colors and elaborate tail feathers on display, they drag behind him. This is known as a tail or train.
During the mating season, the male peacock can mate with up to six different women peahen. The peahen female lays 4 to 8 eggs brown. The peahen female incubates its eggs by sitting on them, and a peacock chicks hatch after an incubation period of about a month. The female peacock, cares for and raises his peacock chicks on his own without any help from the male peacock.
Peacocks are mostly found in the deserts and dry savanna zones. Peacocks are also found in forests and dense foliage particularly during the breeding season when females peacocks trying to incubate their eggs and raise their chicks without unwanted predators to spot them.
